There was an incident at Fairlawn’s Andrew E. Sommbti Compactor/Recycling facility on Wednesday Jan. 24th. Someone put a hoverboard with the battery attached, into the bin, catching the hoverboard and the compactor on fire.
These lithium batteries are regulated as a hazardous material and devices containing these batteries cannot be put in household garbage or recycling bins.
Lithium batteries ARE NOT accepted at the city’s compactor and should be taken to a disposal site such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, or the Summit ReWorks HHW facility for proper handling.
The City of Fairlawn discourages disposing of any type of battery in our compactor. Alkaline batteries can also be recycled and taken to Batteries Plus Bulbs in Montrose Centre for a small disposal fee.
