Recruitment and Selection Policy

Minimum Qualifications for Application

(a) Graduation from an accredited high school or (G.E.D.)
(b) Citizen of the United States of America
(c) Possess a current OPOTA certification by the State of Ohio as a Peace Officer
(d) Have a current valid Ohio Driver's License with acceptable driving record.

Applicant Selection Process

The Fairlawn Police Department actively strives to identify a diverse group of candidates that have in some manner, distinguished themselves as being outstanding prospects. Minimally, our department utilizes a comprehensive testing, screening, background and selection process which assesses cognitive and physical abilities in candidates. As an applicant, you will take part in the following:

  • Civil Service Test (when applicable)
  • Preliminary Interview
  • Drug Screen
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Background Investigation
  • Post-Offer Polygraph Examination
  • Psychological Examinations
  • Medical Examination
